DEBORAH BUTTERFIELD
Deborah Butterfield is an artist who lives in Montana on her ranch. She creates different sculptures of horses out of plaster, mud, sticks, straw, and scrap metals as well. At first, Butterfield had taken on a more realistic style, then she developed a more fantasized look. She only works on her pieces in the winter, so usually, a single horse takes about 3-5 years to construct.
Deborah says, “My horse’s gestures are really quite quiet, because horses move so much better than I could pretend to make things move. For the pieces I make, the gesture is really more within the body, it is like an internalized gesture, which is more about the content, the state of mind or of being at that given instant.”
